Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest manmade structure in the world. The work on this structure began in the year 2004 and got completed in 2010. The building was constructed at a cost of a whopping US $ 1.5 billion.  It was an integral part of a project called Downtown Dubai. The building was completely constructed by EMAAR Properties.

Burj Khalifa was constructed as a part of the Government’s decision to diversify from oil based economy to one that is service and tourism based. The government wanted to garner more international recognition and put Dubai on the map with something sensational.  The building was named after the UAE president Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in return for his crucial support.

However at the time of completion, the world was witnessing global financial crisis. As a result most of the residential and commercial space was remaining unoccupied. Even the Government was forced to seek financial support from the neighbouring oil rich Abu Dhabi.

Standing tall at a staggering 828 metres (2716.5 ft) Burj Khalifa has been declared the tallest building in the world after considering the three main criteria imposed by the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The function of CTBUH is to rank the all the tall buildings of the world based on their height.

There is an observatory deck on the 124th floor. On total, there are 165 floors including 2 basement floors. Burj Khalifa also proudly houses the world’s fastest elevators travelling with a speed of 42.3 km/h.
