The five pillars of Islam

The following are the five most important aspects of the Muslim faith.

  1. Ash – Shahada – profession of faith in Allah and his prophet Muhammad
  2. Salat – prayer five times a day, facing Makkah
  3. Zakat – giving alms to the poor and needy
  4. Sawm – fasting between  dawn and dusk during Ramadan
  5. Haj – pilgrimage to Makkah at least once in one’s lifetime

Jihad, meaning holy war, is sometimes added as an extra pillar.
