Chakkulathukavu Amman Temple – The Shabarimala of women

Chakkulathukavu Amman Temple

The temples of Kerala stand a class atop in grandeur and antiquity when compared to those of other parts. The Chakkulathukavu temple in Neerettupuram is such a shrine that is a place of solace for turbid minds. The temple is located in the town of Thiruvalla in Alappuzha District with dense forests, lush grass and serene rivers adorning the place. The holy rivers of Pampa and Manimala flow on either side of the temple supplementing the perfect ambience for unwavering worship.

The presiding deity is Vana Durga and the idol that was installed by Sage Narada about 3000 years ago is still worshipped. It is believed that the sage installed it in the Shiva Aagama way. The legend of the Devi goes back to the annihilation of the demon siblings Shumba and Nishumba who acquired a boon that they could be only be killed by a woman. Needless to mention, Goddess Parvathi, in the form of Durga, vanquished the menacing monsters. Chakkulathukavu Bhagawathy is a wholesome reaction of the all-pervading Supreme Mother.

Women devotees throng the temple to offer their worship. The main festival of the temple is Pongala that commences on the ThiruKaathikai day in the Malayalam month of Vrichikam (Nov-Dec). A very surprising ritual is the Panthrandu Nonbu occurring in the month of Dhanu in which the Irumudikattu offering by women resembles the one of Shabarimala.

The mere chanting of the Devi’s name endows one with purity, knowledge, benevolence, creativity and an illuminated mind. The Therali Neivedhyam is the prasada of this temple.
