Neyattinkara

Neyyar means ‘River of Ghee’.  Neyyatinkara literally means  ‘Bank of river Neyyar’.  Neyyattinkara is located 20 kms from Trivandrum on the Kanyakumari highway. This small town is famous for Sri Krishnaswamy temple, which was built by Maharaja Marthanda Varma in the year 1755.

When Marthanda Varma was the heir to the throne of Travancore dynasty, he had to fight with his own cousins (Ettuveetu Pillaimar) who also staked their claim. When they tried to kill him, Marthanda Varma was fleeing from them and reached Neyyatinkara. When he could not escape, suddenly a boy appeared in front of him and showed him a hole in the nearby jackfruit tree. The Maharaja hid himself in the hollow trunk of the tree and escaped from his enemies. Later on when he became the king, he constructed the temple as a thanks giving to Lord Krishna. The jackfruit tree  popularly called ‘Ammachi Plavu’ could still be seen preserved in the Shri Krishna Swamy Temple.

The presiding deity of the temple is Sri Krishna who is facing west, believed to be facing Sri Padmanabhaswamy of Trivandrum. The deity which is made of panchaloha, is the reproduction of the image drawn by Marthanda Varma of the boy who saved him earlier. The sreekoil is square shaped and roofed with copper tiles.

The temple remains open from 4.30 am to 11.30 am and from 5 pm to 8.30 pm.  The important festivals of this temple are Ashtami Rohini in (Aug/Sep), 10 days festival in Meenam (Mar/Apr) and Vishu in April. The other deities of the temple are Ganesha, Nagaraja and Ayyappa..
