first mosque in indiaThe mosque’s origin is attributed to Cheraman Perumal, who ruled this region with Kodungalloor as its capital. It is believed that he went to Mecca and met Prophet Mohammed and embraced Islam. Before leaving for Mecca, he divided his kingdom to his relatives and left.  At the time of his death in Mecca due to illness, he handed over some letters to Malik Deenar requesting his relatives in Kerala to provide support to set up mosques.  When Malik Deenar came to India later, he constructed this mosque on the land given by the successors of Cheraman Perumal.
